Hiring the right people with the right skills might be the first step in building a successful business, but retaining those people is the second (and more difficult) step. We all know that retention requires support, challenge, appreciation, recognition and engagement; yet, how do we transmit those rather abstract values into our business environment every day? In other words, how do you show your commitment to investing in your employees?
“Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.” Richard Branson
When we wrote about the 7 secrets to company culture, our very first tip was to prioritise the work environment, as we believe creating a workspace that motivates team members and reflects your company’s ethos really is the crux of investing in your employees.
Work environment covers everything from the communication flow within the office and the amenities available, to the personal and professional development opportunities offered. Of course, there is the physical workplace itself to consider as part of this, too. Cultivating the right environment takes time, so don’t expect to have everything in place overnight. However, if you’re committed to showing your support and appreciation of your team members, it’s a great place to start.
VERVE INVESTS IN PEOPLE
Here at Verve, we are dedicated to providing work environments that captivate and engage our team members. That’s why we just launched our incredible new Verve Training Academy in Collingwood, VIC, moments away from our Verve Head Office.
Filled with natural light, sleek lines and comfortable seating, the Verve Training Academy provides a warm and inviting atmosphere for our valued team members, both new and established. Featuring several large, communal training areas, the building’s composition is designed to facilitate and encourage collaboration, co-operation and the sharing of creative ideas.
Inside the main creative training room, a huge drop-down screen creates a temporary, studio environment at will – an invaluable resource for our photographers-in-training. Throughout the space, a variety of beautiful Verve artwork adorns the walls, inspiring our team members and visitors in equal measure. Year-round, team members can relax and recharge on the expansive rooftop area: a pocket of serenity in the bustling, urban location. All in all, we’re absolutely in love with our new surroundings!
“Employees who believe that management is concerned about them as a whole person – not just an employee – are more productive, more satisfied, more fulfilled. Satisfied employees mean satisfied customers, which leads to profitability.” Anne M. Mulcahy
VERVE BELIEVES IN CELEBRATING SUCCESS
In addition to our new Training Academy, we also enjoyed a fun-filled (and delicious!) ‘Christmas in July’-style luncheon, in order to celebrate the immense success of our team members so far this year. Investing in your team can be as simple as providing opportunities to share a meal together, as it shows that you understand the value of getting everyone away from their desks and giving them a chance to create some fun memories.
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Steve Jobs
